Lawn Mowers - Which Mower is Right for You?

There are so many lawn mowers available that it is easy to become a bit overwhelmed by all of the choices. Do you need a push mower or is a riding mower a better choice for your yard? Should you look for a gas powered mower, an electric mower, a battery operated model, or one that only uses man power? Luckily, by looking at your yard and considering your fuel preferences, you can narrow your selection to just a few lawn mowers.

When most people think of lawn mowers, they picture the standard rotary gas mower. This lawn mower cuts rapidly and does a fairly good job. However, it does not create a close cut, perfectly manicured lawn. This mower is a good choice for people with large yards. If you have some hilly areas, a self propelled model is an excellent choice. However, just remember that self propelled mowers are hard to maneuver, so they aren’t the best choice for heavily landscaped yards. For this type of yard, a mower with rear wheel drive works much better, since it makes sharp turns much more easily.

If you want to cut your grass in a striped pattern or you want to have a lawn that looks as nice as your local golf course, you may want to look for cylinder lawn mowers instead. Although a cylinder mower cuts more precisely than a rotary mower, it does move much more slowly. However, if you aren’t in a hurry, the final result is worth the wait.

Once you decide which of these lawn mowers is right for you, you will need to think about whether you want a standard gas mower, an electric mower, or a battery operated mower. Gas mowers provide plenty of power, but can be loud and costly to operate. Electric powered mowers are quieter, but are limited in range by the length of their cords. With a battery operated model, you don’t have to worry about a cord, but these mowers are often weaker than other mowers.

Finally, if your yard is the size of a postage stamp, you may want to consider hand propelled lawn mowers. Since a hand propelled mower is powered by the person pushing it, this type of mower can give the user quite a work out and may be too much work for the average homeowner. However, the hand propelled mower is quiet enough to be used for early morning or late evening mowing and does not emit pollutants. With the rising cost of fuel, it is also the most economical mower.
